About Julia Titus

Where Performance Meets Life's Meaningful Moments

Julia Titus is the creative force behind Ma Bessie Productions, bringing together a unique combination of performance artistry, ceremonial expertise, and community engagement. With a passion for authentic expression and storytelling, Julia weaves together the threads of music, celebration, and memory preservation to create experiences that resonate deeply with audiences and clients alike.

The Performer

As "Ma Bessie," Julia embodies the spirit and sound of blues legend Bessie Smith, bringing the Prohibition era to vibrant life through powerful vocal performances. Her commanding stage presence and rich, soulful voice have captivated audiences at venues and festivals throughout the UK.

Julia's journey as a performer began in the world of gospel and reggae, influences that continue to inform her musical versatility today. Her original album, "Life is too Short," showcases her talents as both vocalist and songwriter, exploring themes of resilience, joy, and human connection.

Beyond her work as Ma Bessie, Julia is a sought-after guest vocalist who collaborates with established jazz and blues ensembles, bringing her distinctive voice to diverse musical settings.

"Life's most significant moments and stories deserve to be honoured with authenticity and heart."

The Celebrant

Julia's deep understanding of life's pivotal moments led her to develop a parallel career as a professional celebrant. With compassion and creativity, she crafts personalised ceremonies that honour life's significant transitions—from weddings that celebrate love stories to funerals that commemorate unique lives, and naming ceremonies that welcome new beginnings.

Her approach to celebrancy draws on her performance background, bringing warmth, presence, and authentic connection to each ceremony. Julia understands that these milestone moments deserve to be marked with care and individuality, creating experiences that reflect the true essence of the people involved.

The Community Artist

As a qualified Community Theatre Practitioner, Julia is passionate about using the arts to build connections and give voice to diverse experiences. She works with communities of all ages, from schoolchildren to seniors, designing workshops and performances that encourage collaboration and storytelling.

This community-focused work includes historical projects, such as workshops exploring the life of Henry I, and creative initiatives with older adults that preserve and celebrate their personal narratives. Julia believes in the power of artistic expression to foster understanding and create meaningful connections across generations.

Personal Philosophy

"I believe that every life contains stories worth telling—whether through music, ceremony, or creative collaboration. My work across different disciplines shares a common thread: honoring authentic human experiences and creating moments of genuine connection. Whether I'm performing as Ma Bessie, crafting a personalized wedding ceremony, or helping someone preserve their life story, I bring the same dedication to capturing what makes each person and moment unique."

When I'm Not Working

When I’m not performing or conducting ceremonies, I love spending time with my family, especially my granddaughter. I currently live in Reading.
